Dart Points Buying Guide: Length, Grip and Fit
Choose replacement dart points by fitting system first, then length, grip and profile. A measurement such as 45mm describes a point length; it does not identify a separate type of dart or tell you whether the point will fit your barrel.
This guide helps you compare point options once you know your barrel. For the different fittings, use our dart point systems and compatibility guide.
Start with the correct fitting
Check the exact barrel model and the manufacturer's instructions. Conventional press-fit points normally require a repointing tool. Proprietary replacement systems need the matching point and fitting method. Target specifies Swiss Points for Target SP barrels; do not choose a replacement solely because its visible length looks right.
Browse all dart points, standard steel-tip points or Target Swiss Points, then select the available length within a compatible product.
Compare like-for-like point lengths
Before ordering, check how the manufacturer measures the point. Total point length and the length exposed beyond the barrel are different measurements: the section fitted inside the barrel is not visible after installation. Do not assume that identical numbers from different point systems give identical exposed lengths.
Record your current point model and measure the exposed section from the barrel nose to the tip. If the product listing does not make its measurement clear, confirm it before buying.
Which point length should you try?
| Your starting point | What to compare | What to check during practice |
|---|---|---|
| You like your current setup | A replacement with a similar exposed length and profile | Consistent finger placement and a familiar release |
| Your finger rests near the point | A compatible length that gives your finger enough room | Whether your finger finds the same position without catching |
| You want to experiment with more exposed point | The next available length in the same point family | Barrel clearance, entry angle and removal from the board |
| You want a shorter overall setup | A shorter compatible option | Finger space and how the barrels sit together |
Lengths depend on the product range. For example, Harrows lists its smooth Quick Points in 30mm, 35mm and 40mm options. A 45mm point is another length choice where offered, not a default recommendation. Longer points do not guarantee tighter groups or higher scores.
Choose grip and profile separately
- Smooth surface: a useful comparison if you do not rest a finger on the point.
- Finger-grip section: look at where the texture sits relative to your actual finger position.
- Board-grip texture: assess both hold and ease of removal on your board; more aggressive texture is not automatically better.
- Shouldered or tapered profile: check that its shape and fitting suit the barrel nose.
Test one change at a time
- Keep the same barrels, shafts and flights.
- Compare one compatible point change over several practice sessions.
- Note finger comfort, release, grouping and board removal, rather than judging one good visit.
- Keep the option that produces the most repeatable setup for you.
Use the correct fitting tool and follow the point maker's installation instructions. If a point or barrel does not fit as expected, stop and confirm compatibility.
