Dartboard Surrounds: What Foam Grade and Fit Actually Tell You

A dartboard surround helps protect the wall immediately around your board from stray darts. When comparing surrounds, start with board compatibility, the area covered and clearance for your lights or scoring equipment. Material descriptions are useful, but they rarely provide enough information to rank products by lifespan.

Browse dartboard surrounds with your board model and available wall space in mind. A surround protects a limited area; it will not catch every missed dart or protect the floor.

What foam grade can tell you

Density, firmness, thickness and material type describe different things. Density is mass per unit volume, while firmness describes resistance to indentation. The Polyurethane Foam Association explains this distinction for flexible polyurethane foam: a higher-density foam can be soft, and a lower-density foam can be firm.

That is why pressing a thumb into a surround cannot verify its density or predict how many years it will last. Different surround materials and constructions also make simple brand-to-brand comparisons difficult.

Look for information the manufacturer actually supplies:

• The material or construction, rather than an assumed foam grade.
• The stated board compatibility and installation method.
• Outer dimensions, thickness and any limits on use.
• Whether the surround can be reversed, and how to care for it.

If a listing only says “premium” or “high density”, treat that as a product description rather than a comparable test result. Without product-specific evidence, it is not possible to promise that one thickness, brand or material will last longer than another.

One-piece and four-piece surrounds: compare the practical differences

A one-piece surround is a single ring, with no joins to assemble. A multi-piece surround separates for storage and needs its sections fitted together. The number of pieces alone does not establish material quality or service life.

The Formula Sports One Piece Surround is described by its manufacturer as a lightweight active reflex polymer surround that fits most bristle dartboards. “Most” is still a reason to check your particular board.

The Formula Sports Four Piece Surround has a velvet finish, is reversible and installs without tools or a fixing kit. Reversibility is a useful feature, but it should not be converted into a fixed lifespan promise.

Choose between formats according to fit, storage and setup needs. Check the selected product's availability rather than assuming every colour or format is ready to dispatch.

Check the fit before ordering

1. Identify your board: note its brand, model and outer diameter. Do not assume every bristle board has an identical outer rim.
2. Confirm compatibility: check the surround's stated fit. Matching the brand name is not a substitute for checking the model.
3. Measure the whole footprint: allow for the surround's outer size, nearby walls, cupboards and switches.
4. Check accessories: make sure lighting brackets, camera arms and other attachments have the clearance their manufacturers require.
5. Follow the fitting instructions: the surround should sit as intended without unsupported modifications. Ask about compatibility if you are unsure.

The dartboard must be secured with its proper mounting system. A surround is wall protection and must not be used as a replacement for the board's mounting bracket.

Inspect condition rather than using a replacement deadline

Check periodically for damaged areas, separated joins or a surround that no longer stays in its intended position. Follow the manufacturer's care instructions and replace it when its condition compromises the protection or fit you need.

There is no reliable universal replacement interval based only on Australian weather, dart weight or a “high-density” label. For a home or club setup, buy enough wall coverage, confirm the fit and keep the mounting secure.
