Dartboard Cabinets, Cupboards and Stands: Choosing a Home Setup That Fits
A cabinet, surround and stand solve different parts of a home dartboard setup. Start with the space you have, whether you can fix to the wall, and how much storage or portability you need. Add protection around the board to reduce wall marks from missed throws.
Compare the four options
Board mounted on the wall
A wall-mounted board is a straightforward starting point. It needs suitable mounting hardware, a clear throwing area and protection for the wall around it. Check the mounting instructions and the structure behind the surface before choosing fixings.
Board with a surround
A surround provides a protective area immediately around the dartboard. Check its fit for the board and allow enough space for any lighting or scoring equipment. It offers limited coverage, so consider additional wall protection if darts regularly land farther away.
Dartboard cabinet or cupboard
A cabinet encloses the board when the doors are closed and may include scoreboards or storage. The terms cabinet and cupboard are often used for similar products: check the actual dimensions and features instead of assuming a name guarantees shelves or extra capacity.
Measure both the closed cabinet and its full width with the doors open. Confirm what comes in the set: a cabinet may be sold separately or bundled with a board and darts. The featured Formula Bushranger image shows one example of a cabinet set.
Freestanding dartboard stand
A stand is useful when wall mounting is unsuitable or you want to move the setup. Check board compatibility, height adjustment, stability, floor footprint and the way the board attaches. You still need to measure and mark the throwing distance; the stand does not set the oche for you.
Check the room before ordering
- Fixings: the wall structure, cabinet weight and specified hardware determine the mounting method. Heavy equipment may require fixing into suitable structural supports.
- Clearance: allow for open cabinet doors, a surround, lighting and any scoring cameras.
- Noise: impact sound depends on the board, mounting and surrounding structure. Do not assume a cabinet will soundproof the setup.
- Storage: confirm whether dart holders, shelves or scoreboards are included. A separate case may still be useful.
- Portability: compare the stand's packed size and weight as well as its playing footprint.
Set the playing position
For a standard steel-tip setup, position the centre of the bull 1.73m above the floor and measure the oche 2.37m horizontally from the face of the board. Measure from the board face rather than the wall, especially when a cabinet or bracket moves the board forward. Keep the throwing area clear and follow the board and mounting manufacturer's instructions.
Browse dartboards and home setup equipment, then compare the dimensions and included parts of the specific cabinet, surround or stand. Keep spare equipment organised with a dart case and check the dartboard setup guide before installation.
