90% vs 95% Tungsten Darts: Which Should You Buy?
Both 90% and 95% tungsten darts can be excellent. The percentage describes the tungsten content of the barrel alloy; it does not grade accuracy, quality or suitability for your throw.
The practical difference
Tungsten is dense. At the same weight and a broadly similar design, a higher tungsten percentage can allow a slimmer barrel. That may create more room for tight groups, but barrel geometry, grooves and coatings can easily matter more than the five-percentage-point difference.
| Factor | 90% tungsten | 95% tungsten |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Very broad range | Smaller premium range |
| Potential barrel diameter | Slim | Can be slimmer at a comparable weight/design |
| Price | Often lower | Often higher |
| Best for | Most league and home players | Players prioritising a specific slim premium barrel |
Why 90% tungsten is the benchmark
90% tungsten darts offer a wide selection of weights, shapes and grip styles. For most players, choosing the right dimensions and grip position inside this range is more valuable than buying a higher percentage with the wrong shape.
When 95% tungsten makes sense
Consider 95% when you want a particular premium model, need a very slim barrel at your preferred weight, or have already narrowed down the exact dimensions and grip pattern you need. It is a refinement, not a shortcut to better scoring.
What matters more than the percentage?
- Weight: the total barrel weight must suit your rhythm.
- Barrel shape: straight, torpedo, bomb, tapered and scalloped barrels locate the fingers differently.
- Diameter and length: compare actual measurements, not percentage alone.
- Grip pattern: select texture that releases cleanly.
- Balance: front, centre and rear weighting can change timing.
- Point, shaft and flight setup: the complete dart determines flight behaviour.
Buying recommendation
If you are uncertain, start with a well-matched 90% barrel and spend the difference on testing the right flights, shafts or points. Move to 95% when its specific dimensions solve a real fit problem or you prefer that exact model.
